All students are subject to the Legislative Act 1195 of 1997. This act reads as follows: “All students in grades K through 12 of the public schools of this state shall be placed in an educational program that includes the minimum core curriculum established pursuant to § 6-61 217 unless a medical doctor or the parent or guardian of the student certifies that a medical
condition exists that impairs cognitive functioning and that the student should not pursue the minimum core curriculum.”
Smart Core/Core - Beginning with the 2004-05 seventh grade (graduating class of 2010), all students must participate in the Smart Core curriculum unless their parents/guardians sign an Informed Consent Form that indicates they desire for their student to participate in the Core curriculum. Both curriculums will enable a student to graduate from Crossett High School; however, students who follow the Core may not be eligible for scholarships such as the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship or unconditional admittance to many Arkansas colleges or universities.
The Crossett School District will annually ensure parent and student notification of the Smart Core Curriculum beginning in grade six (6) and continuing through grade twelve (12). This notification will include the optional parent waiver to the Core. Informed consent documents provided by the Arkansas Department of Education and signed by the parent will be explained at each notification and will be required for each student.
